The ‘Mother City’, The Mother City is South Africa’s most loved urban centre – and it is really easy to understand why. The temperate, Mediterranean-style conditions is pleasant in the extreme and with old Georgian structures, great dining establishments, leafy piazzas and lots of cultural flair, the whole urban centre is a feat for the senses.

At the heart of The Mother City and an ever-present backdrop is Table Mountain, the flat-topped symbol of the city that’s as striking in the rain as in the sunshine. Begin here with a six minute cable-car ride up the mountain and you are going to right away get your bearings.

The metropolis is flanked on both sides by shorelines with the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and the clear Atlantic lapping the long sands that have made Capetonians a metropolis of beach-lovers. To the south-west and a half day tour away is the Cape of Good Hope; below is Robben Island, former prison home to Nelson Mandela and an additional must-see location.

The South Africa Museum, St George’s Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament are major attractions in the old town, together with the popular Green Market and landmark hotel the Mount Nelson. At night the action moves to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, where places to eat, pubs and retailers line a harbour jam-packed with yachts and fishing vessels.

Soon after a number of days in the city, head north-east along the mountains to the vineyards and Dutch-style homesteads of the South African winelands. At is heart, just 18 miles from Cape Town, is Stellenbosch additionally recognized for its university and ample colonial-era structures.

Quite a few estates here and in nearby Franschoek welcome people for trips and tastings. An increasing number have great restaurants and hotel accommodation, too, and a couple of days checking out the Cape Winelands has become a must for travellers to Cape Town and the Western Cape province.

The first edition of the Sauvignon Concours Mondial has taken place in Bordeaux and Hunter’s Wines have struck GOLD for its 2009 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Hunter’s were one of two New Zealand wineries to be awarded gold which is an amazing effort considering the calibre and range of wine producers entered.

The illustrious competitions goal was to favour the promotion of good quality wines from the Sauvignon vine and to familiarize the public with the richness and diversity of this vine. A total of 512 wines were submitted from around the globe and only 151 awarded medals, an excellent achievement for Hunter’s.

Not only is this crisp well balanced Sauvignon Blanc basking in golden glory but Wine Spectator Magazine awarded it 90 points emphasising its “pear and grapefruit flavours” and it’s “pineapple finish”.

Hunter’s Wines is one of the pioneers of Marlborough winemaking. Lead by Jane Hunter CNZM OBE – the First Lady of New Zealand wine, Hunter’s is internationally recognised in its own right winning more than 140 gold medals – 52 of these year after year for its Sauvignon Blanc. Hunter’s continue to be family-owned and fiercely independent producing over 75,000 cases per year, 85% of which is exported.

In the last 20 years the province of Marlborough has moved from virtual obscurity to become New Zealand’s largest and best-known wine region with a reputation for producing some of the world’s finest sauvignon blanc. This huge potential was something that was recognised back in 1983 by Jane Hunter and her late husband Ernie when they founded their first fledgling winery in the picturesque Wairau Valley.

Since those early years Jane has been owner, viticulturist and managing director of what has become one of New Zealand’s most established wineries, Hunter’s Wines. Under her expertise, the original vineyard area has increased by 2.5 times its original size and the company’s annual output has grown to around 60,000 cases of wine, nearly half of which is exported.

Hunter’s Wines have won more than 80 gold medals at national and international wine competitions, including the Marquis de Goulaine Trophy for Best Sauvignon Blanc in the World at the 1992 International Wine & Spirit Competition. More recently, the 2001 Sauvignon Blanc received gold medals at both the Hotel Grand Chancellor Royal Hobart Wine Show and at the 2002 Sydney International Wine competition where it was placed in the top 100 wines of the competition. The Hunter’s 1999 Chardonnay was also awarded gold in the same international wine competition in Sydney.

Pisa Range Estate Vineyard covers some thirty-three hectares of flat and terraced land at Pisa located 10km north of Cromwell in Central Otago, New Zealand. This area which sits on the 45th parallel bordered by Lake Dunstan on one side and the rugged Pisa Range on the other is proving to be a prime Pinot Noir growing site in the region.

Currently four hectares are planted in a variety of Pinot Noir clones – including some of the new Burgundy clones. Viticulture practices reflect the emphasis on striving for quality to ensure the very best fruit is brought into the winery. These include close vine spacing, careful clonal selection, maintaining low crop yields (around 5 tonne per hectare) and hand harvesting. There is a commitment to organic principles and Pisa Range Estate is an Accredited Member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.

As the southern most winegrowing region in the world, Central Otago has more of a continental climate than any other wine region in New Zealand. The hot dry summers, cold winters and long cool autumns provide the ideal conditions for this notoriously fickle grape. The large diurnal temperature variation – the difference between daytime and night-time temperatures – contributes to flavour intensity and depth of colour. Each season is monitored closely together with the wine this site produces, in an effort to understand the “terroir”. Results so far are very encouraging.

Wines

The wine is named Black Poplar – indicating that grapes for this vintage have been sourced from the “Black Poplar Block” ® – a section of the vineyard that is dominated by two grand 80 year old Black Poplar trees.

The vineyard was established in 1995 and the Pisa Range Estate label was launched with the 2000 vintage. Our philosophy is to produce an “Estate” wine – a wine that truly reflects the site and “terrior”. As a result the winemaker is involved all the way along the ‘vine to wine’ chain. Decisions are made on canopy management and bunch thinning to ensure the best possible fruit is brought into the winery at harvest.

Traditional gentle handling of the fruit is practiced in the winery with some whole bunch pressing. Clones are barrelled separately in French oak barriques (one third new) for twelve months. The wine is kept in the bottle for up to twelve months prior to release. Vine age (some vines arenow 10years old) is beginning to have an impact on the wines which show good pinot definition, style and elegance.

Accolades

Since the first release in 2000 each vintage of Pisa Range Estate has received international recognition. The current vintage has been awarded the following:

Pisa Range Estate has struck Gold at the recent 2010 San Francisco International Wine Awards for its 2007 Pisa Range Estate “Black Poplar Block” Pinot Noir. It also received a Silver medal in the same competition for the 2006 Pisa Range Estate “Black Poplar Block” Pinot Noir.

“This is a very exciting result ” said Warwick Hawker Owner, “as we have recently expanded our exports to the USA with the appointment of a New York agent. These latest awards add to the international accolades both wines continue to receive. Our aim in entering international wine competitions is not only to assist in supporting our export markets, but also to see how well our wines are rated by international sommeliers and wine judges such as Leslie Sbrocco – well known USA wine commentator – who was one of this year’s competition judges. The San Francisco International Competition (in its 30th year) is the largest wine competition in America with almost 4,000 wines entered from 27 countries. This diversity and global perspective certainly gives us a good measure of how our wine stacks up against other leading pinot noir producers around the world. Unlike some international competitions, which specify country/region category awards – the San Francisco competition wines are not categorized by country – but only by variety. It is therefore a very meaningful win for us, as medals are awarded to those wines that truly reflect the varietal expression.“ he said.

Pisa Range Estate is a very small boutique family managed vineyard located in the Pisa, district of Central Otago. It has been producing and exporting its fine pinot noir wines since 2000. Wines are produced with the aim of expressing the ‘terroir ‘and can be found listed at fine dining restaurants in New Zealand and around the world.

The Alsace wine road runs between Marlenheim near Strasbourg and Thann near Mulhouse and is a extremely popular and attractive way to discover this eastern region of France whilst learning and enjoying the food and wine produced here. The route covers a beautiful area between the eastern edge of the Vosges Mountains and the River Rhine. Passing through typical and unspoilt villages, this is one of France’s smaller wine producing regions but it has some glorious scenery and of course produces some very delicious wines. The route is well signposted and at each place of particular interest there are foothpaths which take you through the vineyards to discover the cellars and diverse landscapes of each winery. Rent a mountain bike or travel on foot into the countryside with a picnic, or stop stop for lunch at one of the inns or wineries followed by a tasting session, these are days to relax and enjoy the slow pace of life and the beautiful French countryside.

Travelling through 27 very important and beautiful villages gives you a good excuse to stop on your travels to sample over 50 of the local wines classified as ‘grand cru’ from the Riesling, Pinot Gris, Sylvaner, Muscat and Gewürztraminer grape varieties. On top of the attraction of wine and vineyards the route passes by picturesque villages with black and white houses, floral balconies and medieval castles. A typical example of these traditional communities is the epicentre of the wine making region, the village of Eguisheim.

Eguisheim dates back to the Middle Ages which is evident from the winding narrow streets, its black and white buildings and the remains of the once fortified castle. As far back as the 4th century the area became famous for its wine which was found on the tables of royalty in both England and Holland. The village is also popular because all varities of Alsatian grapes are grown here so if you are short on time or prefer not to travel the whole 100 miles, it is possible to experience all the regions wines in one location.

Eguisheim Hotels

If you would like to stay here, the hotels in eguisheim come in a great many shapes and sizes in a mixture of French and German styles. Two hotels which are considered to be excellent value for visitors on the wine route are the Hostellerie Des Comtes Eguisheim and the Hotel Saint Hubert Eguisheim.

Hostellerie Des Comtes Eguisheim is proud of its intimate atmosphere and gastronomical delights. The 14 non smoking rooms are clean and bright and feature TV, phone, hairdryer and net access for visitors who like to keep in touch.

Hotel Saint Hubert Eguisheim is a modern hotel set amongst the vineyards with spectacular views of the Black Forest. With just 15 en suite rooms the hotel offers is guest’s personal service and facilities such as TV, telephone and mini bar heated indoor swimming pool and sauna.

The Alsace wine route is a very picturesque way of discovering the beauties of the border region with Germany, and a entirely different experience to the other wine producing areas of France.
